The State Duma unanimously supported the adoption of the text of the address to the United Nations General Assembly, the parliaments of the United Nations member states and international parliamentary organizations on the necessity of ending the economic, commercial and financial embargo against the Republic of Cuba.

“This is the position of all the State Duma factions, and we all state it openly in advance of discussion of this issue at the United Nations General Assembly,” stressed the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin Volodin Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin

The Chairman of the State Duma recalled that the UN General Assembly every year adopts the resolutions on the necessity of ending the embargo against Cuba and those resolutions are supported by the majority of the UN member states. According to him, those measures “are just an attempt to break the will of people of Cuba”: those restrictions obstruct the development of Cuba, affect its economy, and it counts “hundreds of billions, and if we speak about cumulative effect – even trillions of dollars”.

“The people of Cuba have been fighting for their freedom for 63 years. To those who try to represent them as beacon of democracy and guardians of the standards: where are your standards? Stay away from Cuba, give it the opportunity to make its own decisions. Cuba does not pose any threat to anyone. People of Cuba deserve their freedom. Keep your hands off Cuba!” emphasized Vyacheslav Volodin. “We always stress that each nation must have right to make its own decisions regarding its path of development, its internal issues,” he added.

The position of the members of the State Duma on the embargo against Cuba remains unchanging and absolutely negative. “Such actions against a sovereign state are a gross violation of the fundamental principles of international law, including the principles of non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for human rights and the duty to cooperate,” the document says.

According to them, restrictions are “an unjust and unacceptable foreign policy tool that significantly harms the well-being of Cuban citizens, impedes the socioeconomic development of the Republic of Cuba and destabilizes the region”.

“The economic, commercial and financial embargo against the Republic of Cuba by the United States of America is a persistent violation of key norms and principles of modern international law. The policy in question is in express conflict with the letter and spirit of the UN Charter. Sweeping economic sanctions introduced in order to exert pressure on a sovereign state are illegitimate,” the document stresses.
