Members of the State Duma unanimously supported the adoption of the statement to the parliaments of the member states of the United Nations Organization and international parliamentary organizations in connection with escalation of tension in the Caribbean Sea near Venezuela’s borders.

“We just call on our colleagues who represent different countries to do one thing: for our part, let’s do everything possible to make the world fairer,” emphasized the Chairman of the State Duma Vyacheslav Volodin Volodin Vyacheslav Victorovich Volodin

during the discussion of the statement.

According to the Chairman of the State Duma, the colonial practices of the past should not be used again even if “some countries and their politicians want this”. “Those who forget their responsibility to the voters, citizens, those who represent different parties, parliaments, countries, should start realizing that,” stressed Vyacheslav Volodin. “Everyone wants to live in a multipolar world, and it is already here, and that means that there should be more fairness. That is what we stand for, because only in a multipolar world nations can make their own decisions on their future,” he added.

“Washington’s aggressive and provocative actions against a sovereign state contradict universally recognized principles and norms of international law enshrined in the UN Charter and in Article 88 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and result in a dangerous growth of tension in the region of Latin America and the Caribbean,” the document says.

In addition, members of the State Duma “express their unequivocal support and solidarity to the leadership of Venezuela in protecting national sovereignty and underline the importance of the country’s stable and independent development”.

“The State Duma calls on the USA to refrain from aggravating the explosive situation and facilitate searching for solutions of the challenges related to the trans-border organized criminal activity and drug trafficking by way of cooperation and dialogue between the countries and bona fide fulfillment of the international legal obligations,” emphasize the authors of the document.

According to the parliamentarians, the international community “should immediately and unconditionally condemn the threat or use of force in respect of Venezuela and come out for preservation of Latin America and the Caribbean as the area of peace, stability and cooperation”.
