The State Duma has passed in the second and third reading the law that is aimed at strengthening the protection of the Russian citizens from the unlawful actions of hostile foreign states. The changes are to be made to the federal laws “On the Russian Federation Citizenship” and “On Defense”.
In accordance with the law, by decision of the President of the Russian Federation, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation may be called in for carrying out tasks to protect Russian citizens who have been arrested, detained or subjected to criminal or other prosecution under decisions of foreign courts or international judicial bodies in which Russia does not participate. Additionally, by the decision of the Head of the state the necessary measures for the protection of such citizens will be taken by the state authorities of the Russian Federation within the framework of their powers.
